Despite various old information on the web, this Netgear WAC124 will not allow setup without first creating an account at Netgear and then letting the AP use it (at a minimum, the first time you try to set it up). That makes this device utterly useless in a situation where you need to create WiFi connectivity without internet or you simply have no desire to have your infrastructure access outside or outside access your infrastructure. I wish I could give it zero stars.

I''ve used Netgear for years including lots of their high end 10G switches. I''ve committed tens of thousands of dollars to Netgear equipment over recent years but now I see their gear is becoming useless for security conscious engineers or use on restricted networks.

If you''re a push button installer and don''t care about privacy, this may still be ok for you. Otherwise, look for equipment that lets you control the install.

If i dont connect this device to the internet I can load the page if i connect via direct cable or its SSID no problem. But thats as far as you can go - the device REQUIRES A NETGEAR.COM ACCOUNT in order to do INITIAL CONFIGURATION!!!!

So i cant access the device to configure it the way it needs to be in order for it to function correctly. Returning this crap - there is absolutely no way around it.

I''ve been a network administrator for several years and i cant get by your garbage SSO landing page. Why do you require this crap when its completely unnecessary? maybe they want it in order to track your internet activity to a user account and sell the data? Wouldnt be a shocker

Once you get it set up, it works fantastic. Strong wireless signal on both 2.4 and 5 bands. Super-fast wireless from my 900MB home broadband. Excellent access point.

The only thing is, as others have said, is that the instructions for how to "just plug it in to a port on the router, and DHCP will take over, and then set it up" are unproductive. The default setup in the AP is for DHCP, but for the wrong network due to its default IP address of 192,.168.0.100. My router is 192.168.1.1, and the AP doesn''t get set up properly by DHCP. I tried to follow these instructions first, and as others have said it just doesn''t succeed, for the obvious reasons.

But I''ve had prior experience with an earlier version of the Netgear access points, model WN604. The setup approach in that older model was outright described for manual method, temporarily connecting directly to a laptop or PC via ethernet cable. These are exactly the same manual configuration instructions as are described in the user manual for this new WAC104. Once you take this manual approach, instead of the DHCP approach, it''s just a few minutes to complete the setup and get the WAC104 prepared for actually being connected on my 192.168.1.1 network.

You first need to get your laptop or PC into the TCP/IPv4 properties, in order to change from "DHCP" to "manual static IP" mode. This is from Network and Sharing Center, and then click on "Change adapter settings", and then select your ethernet connection object, and right-click and select Properties to get the Properties dialog window. Then select the "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" item, and push the PROPERTIES button. You''re probably in "obtain an IP address automatically" mode, which means your PC/laptop is normally handled by DHCP from your router. Temporarily you must instead change this to "Use the following IP address", to assign a static IP (as described in the manual setup instructions of the WAC104 user guide) that will make the WAC104 directly visible to your PC/laptop.

Enter an IP address of say 192.168.0.201, and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, and you can leave the "default gateway" blank. Then push OK, and OK your way all the way back out, and shut down. Then disconnect the ethernet cable from your PC/laptop to your LAN, and instead connect it from the PC/laptop directly to one port of the WAC104. Now re-boot the PC/laptop, and ignore any startup errors you might get from any of your software that might complain about not being able to get to the internet.

On the computer, open a web browser and enter 192.168.0.100 in the address bar. A login window opens.

Enter the access point user name and password.
The default user name is admin. The default password is password. The user name and password are
case-sensitive. You can change these default values later as part of your setup, if you want.

    The Home page displays.

Customize the access point settings for your network environment. My approach was to configure the WAC104 for "static IP" (not DHCP), exactly as I did with my previous WN604. I picked a known available and currently unused IP address of 192.168.1.124, with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, and a default gateway of 192.168.1.1, and a primary DNS server of 192.168.1.1. This means in normal operation your WAC104 will always have a static IP address of 192.168.1.124 from your router at 192.168.1.1. And that means you can always subsequently get back into the setup dialog of the WAC104 if you want to, by using a browser and addressing it via 192.168.1.124.

I also set my desired new SSID network names for the 2.4 and 5 networks, along with the new passwords (i.e. "passphrase") for those WiFi network signins.

I also set wireless security to "WPA2-PSK [AES]", for maximum wireless speed on both 2.4/5 bands. At first I checked "WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES]" but when I pushed APPLY I was warned about the full-speed limitation of this option, something I wasn''t aware of. So I instead checked the "WPA2-PSK [AES]" option which is perfectly fine with me.

If you want you can also change the WAC104 login username and password through the Administration -> Set password dialog.

Push the APPLY button, to save all customized settings.

After you complete the setup go back into Network and Sharing Center, etc., and change the PC/laptop TCPIPv4 properties back to original IP address or DHCP. Then shut down the computer and power-off the WAC104, and disconnect everything.

Now you can reconnect the PC/laptop with ethernet cable back to your router, and reboot. Everything should be back to normal again.

And you can connect the WAC104 through its own ethernet cable run to an open port on your router (or remote switch). Power-on the WAC104, and wait for the lights to stabilize. You should now be able to confirm that you see the two new 2.4/5 WiFi networks using your smart phone and a WiFi Analyzer app.

You should also confirm from your PC/laptop that you can also get to 192.168.1.124 via a browser.

Simple and straightforward. Just manually connect static-IP PC/laptop via ethernet cable directly to the WAC104 for setup.

Not too happy with this purchase. It serves up WiFi access just fine, decent signal strength, about as expected. It''s not *super* easy to set up, but not terrible. I had it "working" in about 30 minutes or so (with my SSID, basic security settings), but spent another hour trying to secure the device well. Never got the thing properly secured, and that''s my main complaint: Security gaps.

    (1) It doesn''t support HTTPS, only HTTP, so any time you use its web admin tool, the admin password flies across the network in plain view. The only way to avoid this is to take a laptop and connect directly to one of the switch ports on the device.

    (2) Many WiFi contraptions have a setting to *disable* access to the web admin tool from WiFi stations and/or from the Internet. This thing doesn''t have that ability, so anybody who connects to your WiFi network would be poised to "overhear" the admin password... and then use it to tinker with settings, weaken your security, etc.

It''s just annoying that this thing offers fancy Enterprise/RADIUS authentication (which hardly anybody will use), and bungles the basics (which nearly everybody needs).

I''m not sending it back - will try to work around the security gaps, but would strongly recommend you find some other device to use as your WiFi access point.

I''m reading a lot of frustration with this thing. It''s easy as pie to set this up. This is an ACCESS POINT ONLY. It doesn''t have a DHCP server built in. It has a DHCP client which allows you to connect a cable to one of it''s Ethernet ports to your home router to get an IP and allow clients that connect to the WAC104 to get an ip via DHCP from your router or whatever the DHCP server is connected to your network.

In my case, I simply connected a RJ45 from my laptop to a port on the WAC104. I was able to login via the admin user and password (that''s printed on the back of the device) with no issues whatsoever.

I bought this because it has the ability completely turn off either 2.4 or 5GHz band. I needed a router where I could completely disable the 2.4GHz band because I use this for my live music setup and my mixing console requires an access point to connect to it via iPad. I also use a guitar wireless unit that sits right next to the access point and any unit that has 2.4GHz turned on interferes with my guitar wireless. I dumped an old Apple AIrport for this unit. It works great.

If you are expecting this thing to connect to your modem and dole out IP''s...you are looking at the wrong box. This is an access point only.

    Update 2021-08-24

This is totally unprofessional and unacceptable. I had to contact Customer Service and submitted documents etc to get them to unlock the device for me to login through their website to access my WAC124. Now, after a few months, the login does not work anymore. There is NO WAY to reach customer support to get help anymore. This almost bricked the product. What a shame that Netgear came out with such bad design.

This leads me to not trust other Netgear products either. I have at my home about 25 Netgear devices. No more.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is such an unprecedented unprofessional bad design. The router/AP can only be set up if
    1) I have internet connection, and
    2) I can log on Netgear website with a logon account.

I have set up over 20 APs and routers, many of them Netgear, but none of them has such limitation, that is such a bad design. In my case, although I have Internet connection AND a Netgear LOGIN account, it does not allow me to logon the router because the router had not been registered under my account. As I got on another computer and tried to register the newly acquired router, Netgear says the unit had been registered under another person! It might well have been because I bought it from Amazon Warehouse as an Like New unit.

I was instructed to contact customer service BUT there is no phone service, no chat service, no immediate service unless one pays extra. I had to send them an email, and I don''t know how long they will take and how many rounds of correspondences will it require to set this thing up. This is BAD.

Buy other brands. DO NOT buy Netgear.

    -----

I called them. It took 25 minutes to reach the rather incapable customer service person. After a lot of this and that, she told me they had to get a proof of purchase, which I can provide but don''t want to go through the trouble. Because based on the conversation, she would have to escalate this to get it possibly transfer. Why do I want to spend so much time on this inexpensive product. Save your trouble and don''t bother. Even if you buy it new, you can have trouble down the road if they always require you to logon Netgear to setup the device.

This WAX204 device only lets you access the complete setup 3 times before requiring registration, which prevents any kind of subsequent wireless configuration, and it won''t even display connected devices. The registration process requires internet on the device, which defeats the advertised use as an access point. Registration demands that you give Netgear all kinds of rights to your data, and I can confirm the device was regularly sending encrypted data to an AWS server, even without registration, despite the access point claiming that it could not access the internet for registration. It is useless as a stand-alone access point on a secure network allowing internal management only. As a result, I will not have anything attached to my network that demands rights to my content, and permission to spy, and it probably violates HIPAA, so I''m returning it.

I needed better wi-fi coverage on the 2nd floor of my house because my main wireless router/gateway was in the basement. I connected it with a CAT6 cable and it was relatively easy to set-up and get fully operational. Seems to work great in my home environment where there might be up to 8 to 10 devices connected to it at one time. I decided to use a WAP after trying a number of wireless extenders. A WAP provides much better performance over an extender but you do have to run a CAT6 cable. The main drawback with a WAP is that you are creating a 2nd wi-fi network so you will need to select which network you want your device to connect to. Note that the manufacturer recommends that the 2 antenna''s should be positioned at right angles to each other, not parallel like it is shown in the picture.

I bought this to supplement my existing isp provided router combo due to the isp insisting on limiting the number of client devices. Thus this has been working as well as it should. The wifi is okay for a smaller location. The support for 3 ssid''s is nice. Other than that it''s a plain router/AP switch combo that just works and this is what I needed!
